There is still lots of summer left and we have certainly had an interesting month.
With the River Valley Fire, Moose Valley Fire and the Chilcotin Slide, our community has come together to get us through these challenging times. Our residents and frontline workers have worked tirelessly to not only meet the immediate needs of fighting fires or issuing emergency alerts and warnings, but also sorting out things like the reception centres.
Volunteer fire departments and search and rescue have coordinated efforts to fight fires while also locating residents and retrieving them as we saw two weeks ago with the individual camping near the Chilcotin River. It was also fantastic to hear the missing dog was located!
Of course there are always the efforts that occur after the tragedy! Volunteers that continue to help with clean up and those that host fundraisers. I know we are all grateful to live in such great communities.
There is still much summer ahead of us and a lot in the current forecast – that may present some more challenges in the coming weeks. As such, we must all be careful and do our part to limit the risk of another fire.
Many thanks to everyone for what you are doing in each situation to help!
At the time of writing there are fire bans throughout our region, and I am asking everyone to do their part. Cigarettes should never be discarded from vehicles or into dry grass. While it seems obvious, we still see people making these decisions that can lead to disaster.
I can't say this enough and it doesn’t end with summer but let's check in on our seniors and be sure they have everything they need as we go through these final weeks of the summer season.
