The world is a dangerous place to live, not because of the people who are evil, but because of the people who don’t do anything about it. (Albert Einstein)
Lots of political news in the media this year because it’s an election year and politicians have much to say.
The B.C. election this fall keeps those in opposition to the NDP government and the media busy looking for fault in everything the government does or doesn’t do. The federal Conservative Opposition leader is busy sniping at the Liberal leader, hoping to trigger an election, and the upcoming USA election process is spilling over to this side of the border. I’m tired of it already.
In my opinion, governments at all levels in a democratic society have one basic responsibility, and that is to ensure the well being of their constituents. We constituents have the right to a decent standard of living, the right to freely state our opinions, (but no hate stuff), and the right to feel safe, no matter who we are or how we live. Given that human beings come in many different varieties, governments can’t ever please everyone and they usually end up getting defeated because they pleased too few.
It behooves us to listen carefully to all the election promises and threats, and to try to separate the bumpf from the facts. Misinformation can sound really good, and politicians have been known to fudge a bit sometimes.
One issue that isn’t getting as much attention as it should is climate change. Changes predicted for decades are happening faster than expected.
Politicians should be telling us their plans for making sure that we humans, along with the Earth’s 8-plus million species of plants and animals, will have enough clean air, water and food to survive.
