FRENCH CONNECTION: 2 important annual general meetings coming up

Cariboo Chilcotin Conservation Society and Museum of the Cariboo Chilcotin both have AGMs in November

Brock Hoyer, my grandson-in-law,  was one of a three-man Canadian team who came first in the World Vet Motocross Championship “Cup of Nations” in San Bernardino,California last weekend. Riders from all over the world competed in the event for “veteran” riders over 30.

Halloween was a great break from routine. Hundreds of city kids dressed up expecting – and getting a good time. Two hundred trick-or-treaters attended a party hosted by the Senior’s Village.  What I heard from everyone everywhere is that all the T&Ts were polite and friendly.

Two community societies have their annual general meetings this month, Cariboo Chilcotin Conservation Society on Wednesday, Nov. 13, and the Museum of the Cariboo Chilcotin on Wednesday, Nov. 20. The  museum gives us knowledge of our past, CCCS  deals with the future, telling us how we can keep the  world’s environment safe.

For years the museum was tucked into a small building shared by the Tourist Centre,  and tended by a city-appointed committee. The current museum came into being when the committee decided more space was needed.  After some negotiations with the city, the  museum ended up in the former public health building on Fourth Avenue. Volunteers formed a society to manage the museum which opened officially in 1991. When the building was needed for another use,  the museum was moved to its present location at the Tourism Discovery Centre on Broadway Avenue South.

CCCS also had its beginnings in the early 1990s. Conservationists and resource businesses were warring at the time, and the B.C. government formed the Commission on Resources and the Environment (CORE) in 1992 to resolve the issues. The Cariboo Land Use Plan was the result. One core group formed the CCCS which was incorporated in 1996.

Both groups need and appreciate public participation.
